After you get an hour into the future radar mode, it starts broadening out the rain and sometimes exaggerates what you will see. Accuweather’s algorithm for using a future radar is terrible. The thunderstorm that is a 5 miles away from my area hits me and brings penny sized hail and flooding rain. It showed that a thunderstorm would disappear by the time it would hit my area. Whatever you do, do not use the future radar. They’re pretty short though - 15 seconds- which seems long when you’re waiting for the video. If you DON’T pay the approximately $4 a month, you can’t skip the commercials. Short videos are available of weather related events. Even with all our science and gadgets it seems too “far-out” for any prediction. It might be unrealistic to give a 15 day forecast in our day and age. I haven’t found the longer range forecast to be as accurate though. It gives you a weekly forecast and if you choose to do so, you can get a 15 day forecast. The main screen is well designed and further investigation of the site is easy to navigate through. The sunrise/sunset and moon phases can also be found on the main screen. I like the feature that allows you to see about 120 minutes ahead if there’s snowfall coming and when there might be a chance to get out of the house and run an errand. Along the way, I try to forecast a little ahead to see what possibly will be needed in the next couple of days. Much of the stuff is not completed until 4 to 5 my time, especially lately with the release of Book Six and the huge increase in members. Shortly after three, I print out about twelve pages from the Forum that I use to compile my daily report of what has happened in the past twenty-four hours. my time (midnight Forum time), including moving as many new members from Read Only to Participant, sending each a reply email, and trying to answer questions or straighten problems out for those who have trouble following the "Joining" process. I then try to read as much as I can on the Forum before the new day kicks in at 3:00 a.m. I then check my email and answer those that I can immediately, with the others handled whenever I am able. I immediately see if there is anything pressing on the Forums, especially looking at messages from our Hosts and the World Crossing Support Forum. Forum time) every day regardless of when I go to sleep. I thought getting up at five was bad! LPO That is pretty darn considerate of Kip to take care of things at that hour. I love a nice hot vanilla chai in the morning. Ludicrous Patents Office - 9:33 am (#2059 of 2963) It gets old when your first thought every morning is "must get caffeine now." I go for plain black coffee no exotic flavors or sweeteners for me.įinn, Kip is normally up about that time every day That is the time when he does a lot of the behind the scenes stuff on the Forum. I love coffee, but I'm thinking about either giving it up or switching to decaf. Next time you get one you should ask for it "upside down" that makes it so all the flavors get mixed up before you drink it so the sweet stuff isn't just in the last few sips:) Yummy. Solitaire, Carmel Macchiato is also my favorite drink. Coffee and caffine aren't the greatest thing for our bodies (mostly why I drink decaf only) so good for you!! Saralinda, that's a great accomplishment. The minute I smell coffee, I want those stupid burning leaves in my other hand. I love coffee, but when I quit smoking I had to let go of coffee too. So Kip posted that message in the posting guidelines this morning at 1:17 Forum Time? Would that be 4:17 AM his time? Sure hope he's got an alarm clock… Pepper doesn't usually find my mouth either… I have a gift certificate! **waving** See you later! I think I may treat myself to a cup from Supreme Bean. In fact, I'm on my way to get my hair cut. Trader Joe's has much friendlier coffee prices than most places, and grinding my own beans means my coffee is always fresh and tasty! I have contented myself with learning to brew a pretty tasty cup on my own. Their prices were bad enough when I discovered them, and they are now past ridiculous for my budget. It's my favorite coffee drink, although the only one I've had in the last 18 months or so was around Easter. MMMMMmmm!!! I also love (any time of the year) a big, hot Starbucks Caramel Macchiato. One of my favorite summer drinks is Good Earth Sweet & Spicy ice tea. Just for the record, I love BOTH tea and coffee. Since I have not heard from her, I am assuming they are just having way too much fun to bother with writing. I've been checking my email, as Elanor said she would write if she got near a computer. I guess most people eat them with salt and butter. I can't really describe them other than to say they are made of corn and are similar to cream of wheat. Oh well, the hottest part of summer should be passing soon. The AC doesn't seem to cool any part of the house really well except for right in front of it. It's hard to tell when the temperatures are so high. My mother-in-law came over yesterday to help me hang it, and it was quite an experience.Įponine, I have some of that up in my bedroom windows and I think it makes a difference. Eponine and I decided to put heat blocking window film in our bedroom to try to cool it down a bit. We did get some rain yesterday, so that cooled things down a bit. We've been having quite a bit of hot weather here too. I love the smell of coffee, but I can't stand the taste. While the increased range doesn't really equate to increased profit directly, it will increase your efficiency, which will eventually equate to increased profit.

With such fantastic, magnificent, colourful stories it is no wonder the Arabian Nights and ‘Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp’ have captured the imagination of many great artists for centuries. You can read the full original story on our blog – here. The second is not as well-known and is the slave of a magic ring which Aladdin receives from the evil magician. The first we all know and love is the Genie of the Lamp. Yep, that’s right, there are two genies in the original story. However, in later versions, he is orphaned and homeless and has to find his own way to win the princess.Īnother character dropped in later versions is the second genie. In the early versions of the tale, she is alive and well and plays a significant role in aiding Aladdin to meet the beautiful princess. One of the main distinctions of the original story is Aladdin’s mother. More recent re-tellings of ‘Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp’, notably the Disney film have popularised characters and eliminated others that appear in the original story. Disney also drew on the Indian city of Agra’s Taj Mahal for the setting of the story’s royal palace. The creators drew inspiration from the city of Baghdad in Iraq and then gave the city a fictional name. Some scenes of the story take place in North Africa, but we remain in China for the majority of the story.Īgrabah ‘the city of mystery and enchantment’ is, in fact, a fictional city imagined for Disney’s Aladdin film (1992). All the characters in the tale are also Chinese apart from the wicked magician who is from North Africa. He’s also not an orphaned street urchin but a lazy boy living at home with his mother. In the earliest versions of the story, Aladdin is Chinese. The original story of ‘Aladdin’ is, maybe surprisingly, set in China. Its continued re-tellings are a testament to the story’s ability to inspire and entertain generations of readers. ‘Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp’ has been translated and adapted many times since its first publication in 1704 and continues to be re-told today. Galland was told these stories in Paris by a Syrian storyteller named Hanna Diab. Galland added ‘ Aladdin and his Magic Lamp’, along with ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves’, and ‘ The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor‘. In fact, the story was not part of the original Arabic manuscript of Thousand and One Nights. It was Galland’s collection that first popularised the Aladdin tale. There are reports of Galland being roused from sleep by young men under his windows in Paris, imploring him to tell more stories. These fantastic and exotic stories rapidly gained popularity. The Arabian Nights stories were first introduced to Europe in a French translation by Antoine Galland in 1704. An enchanting and magical collection of fairy tales of Middle Eastern origin. When lizard discovers a rock lowing with an inner light, she tells the emperor and they awaken the sleeping sun it returns to the sky, shedding light and warmth on all the earth. For days the anxious people wait for the sun to return, but it does not. “Once in ancient Mexico, the sun disappeared. English and Spanish texts appear on each spread of this pleasant tale, diluted only by the several journeys of the lizard between rock and city, and the sun’s prolonged resistance to waking up. So the entertainment is arranged, and all ends well, with the inauguration of an annual feast. The emperor comes to the rock with a woodpecker, and its beak splits the rock open, revealing a sleeping sun, who drowsily agrees to return to the sky if the emperor will provide the liveliest musicians and dancers. He tells her to move the rock, which she attempts, but the rock won’t budge–once more, she’s off to the city. Animals and birds search for it, and fail only the lizard continues, finding a strangely glowing rock and rushing off to the city to tell the emperor. A first-person introduction explains natural absences of the sun (behind the clouds, etc.), and prepares readers for a time, long ago, when the sun disappeared for no reason. Kirkus ReviewsĪda ( Mediopollito/Half-Chicken, 1995, etc.) elongates a Mexican folktale about a tenacious lizard who won’t stop looking for the sun when it disappears Dávalos creates a series of half-lit, blue-toned spreads that evoke the world of the Aztec empire. Readers will cheer Lizard as she finds the Earth’s source of light and warmth. In addition, the use of musical instruments such as drums reinforces Indian culture. The colorful double-page illustrations evoke the native culture by featuring characters in their decorated tunics and headdresses. The story emphasizes the importance of the sun to all living creatures. Her faith and perseverance is rewarded when the celestial body is found sleeping under a rock. After searching high and low, they give up, except for Lizard. Various animals set off to look for it in such places as rivers, lakes, the jungle, and even in the cone of a volcano. When the sun does not appear for several days in a row, everyone becomes anxious. Kindergarten-Grade 3: A bilingual (English/Spanish) retelling of a Mexican folktale. And his wonderful illustrations reflect his art and his knowledge. As an archaeologist he knows a great deal about the time and setting of this story. What a gift to have had Felipe Dávalos create the art for this story! Felipe Dávalos is a great artist and also a learned scholar. Since that day, all lizards love to lie in the sun, to remember the day when one of their own brought light and warmth back to the world. Then the emperor organized a great feast, with the finest dancers and musicians, so the sun would wake up and never fall asleep again. But no one could persuade the sun to wake up. Finally one day she found a strange glowing rock and discovered the sun fast asleep. Little by little all the animals gave up, except for the faithful lizard. All the animals went to search for the sun in the rivers and lakes, through the fields and forests, but the sun was nowhere to be found. Once, a long, long time ago, the sun disappeared from the sky. The game is also fairly repetitive, with nothing surprising or engaging to keep things going. All you have to do is point the horse in the correct direction. On the easiest level, the horse even jumps for you. The game gives you some basic care chores for horses, such as grooming, and allows you to ride your horse on various challenge levels. Unfortunately, even a 7 year old would get bored of the content relatively quickly. This is a sweet story appropriate for the age range this is probably meant for-perhaps 7-8 year olds. The only way to do this is to become a champion jockey and use your prize money to fix it up. In the game, you move to your Uncle’s farm with the task of restoring it. To its credit, My Horse & Me 2 does have a somewhat developed storyline. Despite being well over a decade older, the graphics in that game are visibly superior, as well as pretty much everything else in the game. This is especially shoddy when you compare it to games like Mary King’s Riding Star, which came out in 1999. They were used like walls to keep the cows to certain fields. Hydrangeas are not an indigenous species – they were introduced by Portuguese settlers in the 17th century – but became invasive because of the conditions (the rain, the rich earth) and had a devastating effect on some of the local flora. Faial is also known as the blue island – a volcanic eruption in 1957 left behind a fertile soil full of acidity and aluminium, which makes the flowers blue. Hydrangeasĭrive, walk or cycle along the roads of the Azores and you will be greeted by banks of hydrangeas, often tall bushes full of large floral heads in shades of blue, pink, white and purple. The ice-cream, yoghurt and ghee (from Azorghee) are also exceptional. Two cheeses have Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status: tangy Queijo São Jorge (try it at Queijaria Canada on São Jorge) and buttery Queijo do Pico, but every island produces wonderful ones (O Morro on Faial is incredible). Butter, milk, cream and cheese produced across the Azores are likely to be some of the best you have ever tasted. They did, especially the cows with abundant grass to graze on grazing. When the Portuguese discovered the Azores they shipped over livestock to the islands to see if the animals could survive. Espé cies de São Jorge are horseshoe-shaped cookies stuffed with a spiced filling that includes fennel, black pepper, cinnamon and lemon – those made by Dulçores on São Jorge are good. Pudim conde da praia is made from potatoes, sugar, butter, lemon, eggs and cinnamon. Created to celebrate the visit of King Don Carlos and his wife, Dona Amélia, in 1901, try them at Pastelaria O Forno in Angra do Heroísmo. The islands have their own cakes and biscuits, of which my favourites are Dona Amélia, small cakes made from melkana (like molasses, brought from Brazil), sugar, eggs, cornflour, cinnamon and raisins. Dolphin- and whale-watching trips are widely available. There are also waterfalls and volcanic springs to plunge under and into. In August, the sea temperature can reach 23C, but given this is the Atlantic, the water is cold for much of the year. Swimming “pools” dot the shoreline of all the islands: sometimes ladders hang on the edge of rocks, some can be accessed directly from the shore, and others are in little harbours. There are beaches across the Azores, but since these are volcanic islands the sand is dark or the shore is rocky. Beaches, swimming, dolphin- and whale-watchingĪ natural ocean swimming pool, Poça dos Frades, in Velas, São Jorge. Pico makes the more well-known wines but Biscoitos, on Terceira, has a similar landscape and also produces great stuff. Try them at Pico Wines, a cooperative, or at the Azores Wine Company, which recently opened an architecturally impressive winery with views across the squares of dry-stone corrais that comprise the vineyards. The most famous Azorean wines are from Pico, an island dominated by Mount Pico. These conditions provide distinctive salty notes. What the Azores produces is astonishing: not just for its quality but because the vines are grown in seemingly inhospitable cracks in rocks and hardened lava, buffeted by winds and storms. The town of Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira and the landscape of Pico’s vineyard culture are Unesco world heritage-listed sites. Tea and coffee are grown here, as well as pineapples. Lots of rain makes for a lush landscape with many waterfalls and hot springs. The weather can vary even across a day, with locals (about 245,000 residents) often calling each other to find out where on an island the sun is. We don't talk about the ”fresh fruit” advertised on the site, which is resolved in a sad Macedonia. For two days the whole bread has been missing, and yoghurts are only whole, so who has cholesterol problems can forget them. Another rather serious note arrives at breakfast the fruit juices (if we want to call them) are hot, and ”the ice machine is broken”. So one regulates and choose whether to confirm or go elsewhere. For a 4 stars I really think it's a serious missing, even because at least it would be to be warned on the site and anyway in The booking stage. So, if you're hungry, you have to arrange. The next bad news was to learn that, ”for the moment” there is no restaurant, no bar or other, and therefore no room service. Then, entering the bathroom, I find that if you are not a 40 size, or a contorsionist, both the water and the bidet can use them ”a rate” because they are really small. No one has explained how the room service works, starting with air conditioning, but the room is very small, so if one sits at the desk for the other it is impossible to reach the windows. In this period it is difficult to find a good hotel in the area, and so, after having stayed a few days in a 3-star (in the other hand discreet) I finally managed to find a room in this 4-star that looks very well, I was very happy to come to the room, but I was surprised that no one brought the baggage, but was not accompanied by the room. |
